buddhist prayer flags

buddhist prayer flags?

I’m kind of confused about buddhist prayer flags. in buddhism there is no god, so there is no prayers (right?) so what are the prayer flags for?

sorry, im just learning about buddhism and dont want to sound stupid but i just didnt understand.

Ok, so in Buddhism there are beings: Buddha, the bodhisattvas, asuras, devas, etc etc. So there may not be a god in the sense of the Judeo-Christian tradition but there are god-like beings.

I’m not all that familiar with Tibetan Buddhism myself, but prayer flags are generally “good wish” type things, for ex: long life, health etc etc. The very nature of these mantras and writings is sacred. In this way the “good wishfulness” of the writings is spread throughout the world by the wind/air and also purifies it. The wind also carries this prayers out to different parts of the world/worlds.

So rather than asking for things for the individual to be accomplished by gods, these are “good wishes” for the world.
